Any progress made on this bug? Its extremely annoying. It nearly
disappears while using Gnome Shell however, Gnome shell has its own

I encountered this problem after an installation test: "Install
(ubiquity) in Edubuntu DVD i386 for Precise Daily".
I tested installation for two times, and the same issue occurred. A
reboot solved the issue.

I got it working by:
1. sudo apt-get install mesa-util
2. in a terminal try it with compiz --replace
3. after the reboot, try it with ubuntu (it was set to ubuntu2d)
I do however, have an similair problem with an eeepc 900, which is not yet
fixed.
mesa-util was allready installed ;-(

The problem is the modeline from your monitor for the 1920x1080 mode is greater
than 165 Mhz which is the current cut off for single link mode in the driver:

I tried it with your instructions, but some remarks:
1. should this also allow this, then for desktop effects to be enabled?
2. I think the correct command for step 2 is sudo X -configure :1
with configure only I got errors
3. I had now old xorg.conf, and typing now, also without xorg.conf
