Had that random freezing with Xubuntu/Xmonad. Changed radeon 5870 to
nvidia 450 - still hangs. Reinstalled to 12.10 alpha3 - hangs.
Most frequently i'm playing some online music in chrome/flash player

All I can say is try Unity 2D not 3D.

Just got this bug again and tried to do it as described above by David Cecchin
(dcecchin)
After rebooting and running fglrxinfo got this message:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 139 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
@ste-goddard this bug is not specific to Ubuntu. Search around the
web/forums and you will find it happens on all linux distributions. I've
seen it reported on Arch, Gentoo, and Fedora at least, wherever people
are using v295.* and later nvidia drivers.

OK, I've just discovered a way to unlock the touchpad without having to
log out/kill X: switch to a virtual terminal and back to the desktop.
This makes this bug way less annoying for me.

My laptop regularly crashes with this error message. I think it only
happens after having been on standby before.
Strange thing is, i sometimes get this error message:
Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()
But sometimes i have:
Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIChangeDeviceProperty()
LightCrystal please tell us what graphics card you have. Also have you
tried installing the 12.6 drivers manually?
If you have a HD7850 or later I'm pretty sure you have to use the
cataylst 12.6 or later drivers.

I experimented various freezes/lockups with 12.10 but with Oneiric 11.10
and even Lucid LTS ( 10.04) too since a recent upgrade !
I had less problems since I upgrade firefox ( another deceptive one )
14.01 and now 15... but it is another story...
It is really a shame... I agree with Hein (#130)

To get rid of fglrx, run:
sudo apt-get purge fglrx

Same on a Dell Latitude e6530 with an i7 3720M on Intel Graphics. I
disabled Optimus (thus switching to the nvidia graphics) and didn't have
any freeze since, so it looks related to the Intel HD 4000.
