I have a Intel i5 (1st gen) processor and ATI Radeon 5400 series
graphics card. I have noticed that it keeps logging me off when I start
skype.. not sure if that's relevant. Just wondering if that's the case

Or just switching to the linux console (terminal) (e.g., with Ctrl-
Alt-F1) and back to X (with Ctrl-Alt-F7 in my case) fixed the problem in
my case: touchpad is working again, nothing to lose.

I have the same issue (with the same monitor : Samsung SyncMaster B2030) in
Ubuntu 12.04.
I tried xrandr approach and even that's not working.

same thing happens on unity 12.04 3.2.0-29-generic 64bit intel i7 laptop with
intel hd3000. this can't be nvidia or amd only problem.
was running firefox and cpu was doing nothing ~6%, and ram has ~50% not used.
system uptime ~2days.
do note this also happens in lucid however i remeber
xdiagnose is current according to apt-get-install xdiagnose; bug not
fixed, not sure what to do to get this fix installed at this point

This bug also affects me. I have a core i5 2430M using the intel driver.
Initially I thought this to be a problem with the intel drivers, but
seeing people with amd and nvidia cards have the same problem I
