This may be unrelated, but I have observed that GeForce FX series graphics
cards do have problems drawing the left hand side launcher in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
This bug has not been fixed at all in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS.
I only tested this with 32-bit version.
I own GeForce FX 5200 and GeForce FX
This bug affects me also... Two times a day I need to get to the tty1
and manually kill X Server because it hangs (or Compiz crashes and I
lose window decorating. It seems that it occurs when I start a lot of
intensive apps (like Firefox with ~12 tabs, Thunderbird and Gimp).

A Windows-only compose key program uses the ctrl key as the compose key.
This is apparently impossible to do in X input methods because you can only
bind actions to the press of ctrl.
Of course this is possible. Compose is unrelated to actions in the XKB
meaning of

It seems to be related to the /etc/rc.local script after all. I forgot
to disable the execution bits the last time; but now I've run chmod -x,
the problem really seems to be gone. I've done a fresh install and

I have exactly the same problem. Altough I'v noticed that mouse cursor theme
affect it (oddy enough!)
Reverting to default Adwaita mouse cursor theme corrected the issue.
Another issue, with non-default mouse theme and nouveau drivers, is the
mouse cursor lag.

and therefore a requirement of Unity (unityshell plugin).
Compiz 0.9.8+ has the ability to use GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, but it
does not make it a requirement like Nux/Unity does.

please install 'evtest' package, and test if you get events from the
kernel:
- log in from a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1)
- sudo -s
- run evtest (with the correct /dev/input/eventID as an argument, you can check
ID from 'xinput list' from the desktop)
- use the tablet
do you see events

I'm having the same issue in 12.10. I just noticed it two days ago.
I did quite a bit of updating from software center
Updated some Tweaks stuff and other programs.
Even added Htop hoping to catch something but all I caught was more freezes.
Today ..it happened about 5 - 7 times. I've worked about
Intel X.org crashes of this sort used to occur occasionally in past
Ubuntu versions, but since upgrading to Quantal it's happening after a
few hours of uptime or less.
