I just got the problem in 12.10 for the first time. I have a dual-screen

I have a monitor with aspect ratio 16:10. When I switch to a resolution
with a non-native aspect ratio (such as 16:9), the display is distorted
heavily. It is not unusable, but pretty close. The same resolution is
displayed with much better quality by fglrx and Windows 7.
By the way: this seems to happen independently of the display manager
used. I see it with unity, gnome-shell and the old gnome fallback.

And I shouldn't have used the plural resolutions above. It seems the
garbled display only occurs for the resolution 1920x1080, which is the
closest resolution to the native one of my monitor: 1920x1200. All
smaller resolutions, even those with the non-native aspect ratio 16:9,
are displayed

I'm running 310 now, and the differences between it and 304 are slight
at best.
Unity seems sluggish. Resizing windows is slow. For example, if I resize
a terminal window and let go of the mouse, it takes a good 2-3 seconds
before the window resizes. A large CPU spike is seen when this happens.
fwiw, I just ran into the fubar keyboard problem with vmplayer 5.0.1 in
Ubuntu 12.10, but found a workaround. Every single time that my mouse
went into the vmplayer window, vmplayer trashed all the modifier keys so
that CTRL, SHIFT, ALT all stopped working. xmodmap showed:
shift
lock
I found a workaround for my problem - it was an xmodmap setting that
vmplayer didn't handle properly and was trashing. In case it is of
interest, I posted the workaround at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-
config/+bug/195982/comments/226.
