I'm having issue with my touchpad on a Macbook 1,1. After much
investigation I've found there are at least these many places to tweak
the behaviour of my touchpad:
1. The default sytem settings mouse and touchpad tool.
2. The dconf-editor key /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugin
Timo: I've never had it completely hang the machine, but I've also not
been patient enough to sit around and wait to see if X will eventually
recover on its own, I always do a VT switch out and back (and get
welcomed by an apport dialog)
Has happened several times today. Will be upgrading to 3.8.
Actually, I'm just discouraging people to install Ubuntu on Apple
hardware just for this. It's too much of a hassle to configure the
touchpad properly and it's definitely not newbie-grade stuff.

Confirmed, I was able to reproduce this on a Latitude 13 (cantiga gfx
8086:2a42) with stock Ubuntu/Unity. Full screenshot attached.
Mousing over the tab caused the corruption to move around from letter to
letter. Was able to capture the corruption via a regular screen grab.

The bug persisted for all lifetime of my HP Pavilion dv6018ea. I can
attest that it certainly is not ubuntu-specific, but rather nvidia-
driver specific issue. The last version of ubuntu that I tried was 10.04
LTS.

I have tested all kernels from 3.2_amd64-3.5_amd64 that were shipped via updates
and none worked for me.
After that i installed the 3.8.0-999_amd64 and tested with the options from #650
and as far as I can tell, the options 'powersave=0 i915.i915_enable_rc6=0'

I upgraded to 3.2.0-34-generic and the slow off-screen rendering problem
is no longer occurring on my Thinkpad X220. Performance is normal. I
haven't tried it on the ASUS yet.
