I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 x64 on my desktop with GeForce 8500GT.
I have some lags using nouveau, so i have decided to install the package using

After the reboot, the video server does not work anymore,
Quick question: has this monitor ever worked correctly (i.e. without
generating an invalid EDID error message)?
From the looks of it, this is just broken firmware on the monitor that
needs to be replaced or overridden.

That's a shame, I've noted a couple of extra placed where regressions
are making themselves known, though I'm not entirely sure if they're
related 100% to this bug.
1. Flash video in Firefox is broken and does not render correctly. This is not
the case in Google Chrome.
2. Transparent
Yes, those are symptomatic of the renders not being pixelformat-aware
and just getting it wrong.

First step will be to verify that setting the brightness manually
(either using xrandr or through /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness) is
still functioning correctly. If that is, we can assert that the bug lies
in the ACPI handling of the key presses. Otherwise, the bug lies
somewhere in the chain

Fixed it by grabbing the latest GIT of the driver then patching with this:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57023
The patched version on the git removes a reference to xaa. It loads but
gives a black screen.
This is one patch (required) has already been added to the git repository
