I can confirm that this bug happens on Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome.
The problem is that some mice are getting stuck after left clicking;
from what I have read, I think this only applies to those using wireless
mice.
I am using the Logitech M-RBF111 Mouse which uses an old wireless communication
system
Another 2 workarounds found:
#1 - still flickering, but it is far better, than default settings ;-)
In KDE go to System Settings Desktop Effects Advanced
When using compositing type OpenGL change Tearing Prevention (VSync) to Full
scene repaints and Apply.
#2 - *recommended* as it does not

AMD Radeon
And again, and again, and again.
And once more, re-plugging the external monitor caused an unrecoverable
freeze (meaning that neither ctrl+alt+f1 nor unplugging and replugging
the monitor would fix the issue) forcing me to a hard power off.
For god's sake when is this going to be looked at, at

fix for this through official updates.
Scroll wheel doesn't work properly in any application I've tried so far.

Being that I noticed users here said they upgraded to Trusty (as did
I), I decided to do a clean install to see if indeed the issue was
