Public bug reported:
I have a font rendering issue in a Firefox 34. Using Ubuntu 14.10
(kernel 3.18.1), Mesa 10.5-dev
(https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers) and R9
270 videocard.
Here's detailed report from another person:
Is there any solution for 14.10? I am not too willing to switch to Vivid
Alpha at the moment, but this bug has become annoying now.

Sorry for the long delay response. I just tested the 3.16.0-28 kernel
and unfortunately it doesn't even detect all of my displays correctly --
it only shows 1 external monitor in the display settings rather than
both. I get picture on both of them, but I can't set them up correctly
any more.

I can confirm the same bug on WMWare Workstation 11 and Ubuntu 14.10.

Ben, unfortunately this is the default Ubuntu kernel without this
feature.
You need to use version 3.16.0-28.37hf73386v20141212b2 to be able to
benefit from it.
Do install this version you should do:
sudo apt-get install
linux-image-3.16.0-28-generic=3.16.0-28.37hf73386v20141212b2
and then
Unfortunately, I have the same behaviour with your kernel:

Per a suggestion on the xubuntu-devel IRC channel, I tested the intel
xorg-edgers ppa driver -- to no avail.
Next suggestion was to try a later kernel. First, I did a fresh install
of the current vivid daily image and confirmed that problem was still
present. Then I installed the latest 3.17
After poking around I learned that the cure is to install a correction
to the Intel microcode. That in turn requires installing theintel-
microcode 2.20140913.1ubuntu2 source package, which is available from
Launchpad. However, I haven't yet figured out how to actually do that.

And my keyboard layout is set so that pressing that key will give me
