I've exactly the same problem. Ubuntu 14.04 all updated. Tried fglrx,
fglrx-updates an Catalyst 14.12 Omega from AMD homepage. All versions
segfault on boot. Only the open source driver runs fine out of the box.
But playing highend games with the open source driver is not possible.

I fixed this issue with removing the deb from /var/cache/apt/archives/.deb

The open and closed drivers currently don't play nice together.
Hopefully one day that will change. But to me it looks like you haven't
fully removed fglrx and this is causing you problems.
