Playing video, e.g. in vlc or chrome causes the whole machine to hang
after 5-10m of video playing.
I also tried
vlc --avcodec-hw none
which I found in another similar bug but it still crashes.
It happens with DVDs and also more modern codecs.
Everything worked fine on
I can give that a try, but I'm not sure I can reproduce this issue in
Unity. Do the daily builds have the option of running XFCE? Also, it
could be a while until I can confirm this, I don't have an easy test
case.

i got the errors on original-driver and the same after updating driver via ppa:

Note that there is a Ubuntu package of 4.12.1 available now
http://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/xfce4-settings which can be installed
at least without dependency issues on Ubuntu 16.04.
The upstream commit that fixes the issue is here
This fixed worked for me in 12.04 on AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with an
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache GPU which requires a 304.xx driver.
