A week or two ago, Software Updater started offering me version
304.134-0ubuntu0.16.10.1
It had never offered me the "fixed" version 304.132-0ubuntu2, but only
the original version 304.132-0ubuntu1, which did not load into the
kernel (with the mtrr_add and mtrr_del errors).

OK I thought I saw that it was 304.134-0ubuntu1 that fixed it in 16.04

Tested on a Trusty 14.04.5 VM with updates installed, trusty-proposed
pinned for selective upgrade.
$ sudo apt-get install snapd/trusty-proposed snap-confine/trusty-
proposed xserver-xorg-core-lts-xenial/trusty-proposed
This installed the packages correctly, including systemd.

That's not the version that fixed it in Xenial, my comment
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-304/+bug/1639180/comments/73) indicates it was
304.134-0ubuntu0.16.04.1. There is no 304.134-0ubuntu1.16.xyz in the
official archive for either Xenial or Yakkety.

SRU verification for Trusty:
I have reproduced the problem with xorg-server-lts-xenial
2:1.18.3-1ubuntu2.2~trusty3 in trusty-updates and have verified that the
version of xorg-server-lts-xenial 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu2.3~trusty1 in -proposed
fixes the issue.
Marking as verification-done

probably not X-related. I also tried switching between
