Now we understand this problem, it's just going to be a series of
workarounds in Mir, and Chris suggested another good one in the hangout
today that might also fix it for radeon and nouveau (bug 1211700). Plus
we have some workarounds proven already in comment #20.

Unfortunately there is not enough debug information in those stack

Libreoffice is a bit different yes, because of its splash screen. But
your log in bug 1668425 confirms it's exactly the same problem as this
one.

The solution it seems is for Unity8 to have an Xmir -rootless started
and ready at login to support legacy X apps (that are not pure GTK).
Only problem with that is that you will then hit bug 1577641.

"couldn't really enter input into the surface at all"
That's because the About dialog is modal; meant to stay on top and never
give focus back to the app window till it's closed. You can confirm that
in Unity7.
So this is just a simple window management bug.

So it sounds like U8 or Libertine isn't launching it correctly.

Strange that starting Xmir in advance of launching Thunderbird from the

finding or accessing (apparmor?) the X socket.

Confirmed both the delay and unity8 crash. Sorry, I forget how to look
up the URL of the crash report my system just sent.
The same delay bug occurs in Mir demo servers - 30 seconds between right
clicking and a menu appearing. Might be dbus-related, although the
default dbus timeout is 25
Although the crash isn't directly related to the 30 second delay. I've
been seeing the same crash intermittently for years. I recall previously
trying to nail it down with alan_g without success.
Anyway, it might be helpful to make this bug about the delay, and bug
1668466 for the crash.
**
Confirmed from unity8.log, the crash is the same as bug 1668466
