They're just different names for the same things, so these are equivalent for the sake of testing: "Gnome on Xorg" = "Ubuntu" "Gnone" = "Ubuntu on Wayland" It sounds like you have zoom enabled for some reason. To turn it off go to: Settings > Universal Access > Zoom > Zoom (slider) = OFF

Same problem here. I'm using Ubuntu 18.10 LiveCD and from time to time my Ubuntu just freezes and when it happens my pendrive LED blinks like crazy. It's hard to recover from it, but yesterday I did. The log it at the post below. Here's my post about it:
