Ok I was able to reproduce it. The tearing happens, because (quote) "rotation is handled by doing a blit in the server which isn't synchronised to anything." The 'modesetting' driver should gain support for 'TearFree', but that's unlikely to happen anymore because everyone has mostly moved to
