I had the latest DisplayLink driver and it still did the same thing to
me. And it gets worse than that. No errors are generated but the speed
is so slow it is almost unbearable whenever the DisplayLink device is in

I can still produce this bug on Debian stable. It requires me to run a
process that does a lot of random io in a a large file, such that some
swap is consumed.
I also had an instance of X crashing as a result:

Ahh, this issue has been driving me crazy since I did the 14.04 upgrade.
I'm using ubuntu 14.04 + xfce4 + plex connected to my yamaha receiver
and panasonic hdtv (with pulse-eight cec usb dongle). (setup is years
old).
The procedure above (#22) did the trick for me. Thanks!

I am unable to pass the -v option to an application I want to run in an
xterm window. For example
$ xterm -e bash -v
XTerm(271)
$
This returns the version of xterm when I expected it to open an xterm
window that would run then run the 'bash' with the -v option.
I'm seeing this on an Lenovo T420. I frequently see it when coming out
of hibernation (because my system is still swapping in).
I can "recover" by suspending to memory and then unresponding. At that
point the touchpad works again just fine without restarting X.
