I'm not sure it's a duplicate. I'm not sure if it's the same behaviour

Excellent!, this seemed to fix it, thanks Martin.
Adding the test on /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf (before calling
failsaveXServer) seems to cause X to hang without further explanation,
so I ended up adding it to /etc/gdm/failsafeXServer and that did the
trick.

I've noticed that removing the mouseemu package solves the issue (I can

Just for the record, as talked on IRC, I contacted upstream about
contributing changes to provide gettext support:
1) Code changes
• Add gettext support in the code
• Replace the string ID's in the code by the English strings
• Wrap all those strings in _() so they can be extracted by xgettext
