1) Rename xorg.conf.
2) Reboot.
3) Configure monitors with g-d-p.
4) Reboot (or logout/login should work) to reproduce the issue.

It's a bit harder to boot into VESA-only from the LiveCD now. If you
can't run a virtual machine or something, I think your best bet would be
to add the nomodeset kernel parameter at the boot menu, then play with
/etc/X11/xorg.conf once booted to force the vesa driver to be used. (See

Thanks for being patient with this bug. You can create a default-ish
xorg.conf using Xorg -configure. Use sudo service gdm stop from a VT
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) to shutdown the current X or else the command will fail.
