Ok, I don't know exactly what triggers this error... I think that Chrome
showing Tweetdeck or some big flashing-ad does it, because the screen
flickers/breaks a lot (and in Ubuntu 14.04 didn't)... anyway, now I've
installed 4.7.0-040700rc5-generic kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
Yes, I did upgrade directly to 16.04, from 14.04. In 14.04 I did not have
any issues.

I've upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04, and I'm sure that this issue wasn't
there.
But in the bug #1525390 the user said that was happening in 15.10, so it
seems to be affecting that version too.

For those of you with Nvidia cards having this problem: if you feel like
giving it a try I solved it by doing two things, but I am not sure if
the combination of both gave me the solution or just the last one:
I first installed Michael Kuhn ppa and upgraded the system:
sudo apt-add-repository -y
I confirm this bug is present in 12.04. And I see this bug is also not
fixed upstream (there are opened bugs about this in freedesktop.org).
What exactly have been fixed? If there is a patch, it would be nice to

The bug is present with NO nvidia-current installed. In fact, the
picture I attached a few days ago was taken after booting from a live CD
(well, pen drive). If I install nvidia-current the screen goes
completely black, but it can be corrected by adding intel_iommu=off to
the kernel options.
I changed the status to Confirmed, because the attached picture shows
the corruption.
