To clarify the sequence of events: X had a change, which required a
change in the binary driver from ATI. That's landed now, and so compiz
(which is the framework underpinning Unity) needs a change to use it,
the change is in a PPA but not yet landed in the main archive. Dart is
saying that, with
You can get it from the daily PPA, aiui, and it will land in the archive
early this week.

Unfortunately, we also can't forward-port the 10.04 interface to 10.10.
So options are:
- stick on 10.04 LTS
- use a USB key to test the 10.10 interface on your hardware
- wait for 11.04

@Tomek
I recognise that the bug is critical, the question is whether it can be
addressed for Maverick, or whether we should rather document the issue
as a blocker on that hardware and fix it for Natty.

Markus, if you log in at the console (ctrl-alt-F1) and examine

Bryce, can you comment on:
- what X does with acpid.socket
- what the consequences of missing it on startup would be
- whether we can drop the acpid.socket lookup at all, or
- whether we can make X watch /var/run/acpid.socket with inotify and use it if
it shows up
Thanks!

Black fails badly for me, X.org crashes, the Xorg.log for the crash is

Bryce, this is interesting to me too. Could you check with Jesse Barnes

for merging into our DRI2? And if there are any other bits required to
