The 14.04 live-CD didn't show the same behaviour during my only one day
of testing. Once it didn't wake up at all, so even switching to a
console screen wasn't possible anymore, but the other times the system
woke up normally.

frequently after one of the latest kernel updates.

Problem described there occurs regularly, meaning nearly always, after
sleep or standby. Switching to a console before(!) entering standby
helps to circumvent the problem. Switching to a console after wakeup is
possible but
