None of those pauses correspond to blocking in -intel. If you can still
reproduce the issue, grab a stacktrace of X during the delay. (If you
are correct in your assertion, then X will also pause if you run it
manually.)

I am having this same problem xubuntu 12.04 64bit. Before the login
screen appears the led under the mouse goes out. When the login screen
appears the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for about 20 seconds.

This problem disappeared and reappeared and disappeared and reappeared
and disappeared for no apparent reason, until about two weeks ago. Since
then the delay is gone, so I guess this has bin fixed
(unintentionally?).
