I tried to reproduce this, now I receiver this error:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output HDMI-1-1 --mode 1920x1080
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 7
I send a ubuntu-bug report.
Yes, the reaction time was slow and there were artefacs at the external
screen.

+ With nouveau, the HDMI port is not working in Ubuntu 12.04LTS with
3.2.0-29-generic, newest nvidia driver with bumblebee, through
asgard2, the fact HDMI doesn't work at all in Precise through Saucy
would be a downstream (Ubuntu) only issue.
However, the issue of low FPS and graphics artifacts in Trusty is an
upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the
appropriate channel by following the instructions
asgard2, thank you for testing Trusty. For now, I'm going to send this
to xorg for review, as this would appear to be an issue there, versus
the kernel.
Despite this, regarding the information you provided:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output HDMI-1-1 --auto
Floating point exception (core dumped)
