afaik, it happens in physical machines too... I saw it in Ubuntu forums,
a dude saying his Ubuntu Karmic is not booting into X anymore.

I have the same problem...using VirtualBox 3.0.6 as well...
So maybe this bug is specific to virtual machines ?
