Ok, undoing the above "fix" by removing the /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe
file fixes this issue for me.
Pretty stupid after all... Just mindlessly applied copy-pasted the command and
never really thought about what it did.
Sorry for the clutter guys!

I had a lot of problems too because of that reason, of which most problems were
solved after selecting the 'right' kernel.
The touchpad problems remains though.
However I realize I got the touchpad working with the 'wrong' kernel by doing
the following:
echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/mod
I fixed it but not exactly sure how...here's what I think I did.
I upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and just noticed that the "latest" kernel,
2.6.31-14-generic was not being used. I went into system>
administration>synaptic package manager and checked grub-pc which
installed Grub2 and uninstalled Grub
I'm also having this problem, but only the touchpad part.
The Synaptics touchpad on my Dell Latitude D530 is not detected anymore after
the upgrade to 9.10 .
It worked perfectly in Jaunty.
No sign of synaptics in lspci, lshal or dmesg ...
tpconfig does detect the synaptics touchpad though ...
Ho
Neither the touchpad nor the sound is detected. It seems that the
hardware is not detected. Both work in XP (this is a dual boot
machine).
