This looks more like a duplicate of bug #994203 (desktop freeze except
mouse cursor, and Ctrl+Alt+F1 still works), whereas bug #993187 mainly
describes a total system freeze.

Complete system freeze, except for the cursor
The suggested fix from tomazko didn't stop the system from freezing, but
it did help fix the slight sound issue I was having. Which for me, due
to my love of music, is huge. I did find that if the system freezes, if
I put the system into stand by and take if off stand by, then it is
fine.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and then
sudo dpkg-reconfigure x11-common
it fix for me X freeze
