This could be related to OpenGL texture sizes or something similar.
Unity7 (Compiz) has workarounds to avoid that limitation. And Xfce
avoids it by not using hardware accelerated compositing at all (last I
checked). It's not surprising if only Gnome Shell hits a problem like
this...

This usually happens for me when I login and the X session is started,
which sends me back to the login. I have made the observation that this

I see both.
During power up, the messages appear on displays 1 and 3.
The sign in is on screen 2 (primary display).
The display manager shows 3 displays, but after the apply is selected, only
two work.
Why do they work with Xfce and not with gnome?

What's the point of this bug? You're not saying what to quirk, the
driver you're using is not -evdev and any quirks should really go
upstream anyway.. (libinput)
