As it happens, the bug stopped some time after I reloaded the grub files a few
weeks ago.
Since then a number of patches have been edited which may have also corrected
the problem.
I really don't know what happened but now I can enjoy Ubuntu without fearing a

No, it doesn't : E: unable to find package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
even after I ran a pass of the updates-manager: e.g there was a kernel update
from 4.13.25 to 4.13.32 but once installed an rebooted, no way to select it,
and sudo update-grub fails with ~can't find /cow~
