Hope you had a nice holiday. In case you didn't get the xorg-edgers
package with the patch applied, I copied it to
http://www.kvante.info/LP379157/ . It's the 2.8.1 package. It should the
replace the one that is currently in xorg-edgers, since that one does
not have the patch anymore.
More investigation reveals the following behaviour in Karmic:
- if Extra typographic characters option is enabled in layout settings, the
extra characters can be entered, but the ?? issue exists;
- if the said option is disabled, the extra characters can still be entered,
but the ?? issue is not
I experience the same problem, karmic alpha 5 can not start the
installation

This happened to me recently when I installed some updates via synaptic.
I rebooted and it went to low graphics mode because X decided to
overwrite (i assume) my conf file that WAS working just fine.
I fixed this problem by manually editing xorg.conf to the following

Damn, I hadn't read the comments about compiz properly. Right, simply disabling
compiz solves the issue, though you have to log in to gnome to do that. :-)
That means the LiveCD will be very broken.
So perhaps blacklisting r6xx/r7xx from running compiz is the right solution to
this? Note that
Loaded vista which also has a low refresh rate when I looked at the
figures. 59 was what it was set at and was useable. 60 was horrible -
bright and headache inducing. Don't understand really..
