no, you are wrong. i used the standard open source driver in jaunty
from the repo, i also didnt compile anything. i didnt even install them
because it booted with that driver after i changed the graphics card

I just resolved this issue. The whole problem was caused by bios
setting. There is a Protect Audio Video Path Mode option under chipset
configuration. It was set at Paranoid and that was the cause of the
problem. When that bios setting is set to Disabled or Lite the
problem does not appear. Mesa

I found a work-around for this bug, you can see bug #467841, at the end
there is a patch (sortof) that enables normal boot with KMS and intel
driver and X startx normally with no problem after that.

Oops, disregard my previous attachement, I forgot to trigger the freeze before
dumping.

I've managed to reproduce the problem on a colleague's Toshiba laptop.
Mirroring (via xrandr --auto ) worked but setting side by side mode in
gnome-display-properties caused a lock up.

*- the monitor does not even have to have power for the boot process to

Adding my invalid Xorg.conf - which was NOT corrected by dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg. This is the resulting file after running
dpkg-reconfigure, then modified to use nv driver. I had previously run
nvidia-uninstall. I expected dpkg-reconfigure to fix my problem, is
this not the expected
