Are you sure you are not running Unity 3d? It's probably the Unity 2d version.
This bug (as stated before) is an upstream bug which broke composition in the

Re-installing the GDM package did not improve the situation on my system. I
also tried the new GDM version from the PPA, 3.0.4-0ubuntu3~natty1, with no
luck.

i915 Hangcheck timer
Assuming that backtrace is accurate, looks like a race condition that
can result in device-proximity to be undefined sometimes.
