You have a point, but it's not related to my primary issue.
I'm using a dual-DVI cable, however the mobo (Asus P8H61I /
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H61I/ ) only
supports DVI with Max. Resolution 1920 x 1200 @60Hz. The highest
available for me was 1600x1200 and 1680x1050.

Catalyst 12.2 drivers, all I get after reboot is Unity 2D, can't run

Connecting an external display or projector defaults to an extended
desktop configuration. If I want to mirror the display for example when

Yeah, I did some research on the overscan. I happend to run into an

Evolution does not obey xmodmap
Forgive me if this is stupid (I can't help that, I'm afraid) and at the risk of
tempting fate...
I haven't had a crash in a couple of days. Only two things have changed since
the last crash: firstly I disabled the Flash plugin in Firefox, and secondly

Looks like it isn't finding the kernel nvidia driver. Guess when you
upgraded it updated the kernel but for whatever reason didn't rebuild
the nvidia driver. Probably if you go into grub and boot an earlier
kernel it'd work.
Try `sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*` and then reinstalling
Using the tool nvidia-xconfig I was able to reactivate the nVidia driver in
Xorg. But after rebooting the tool nvidia-settings still complained:
