to believe that it was supported in Wheezy. But now I see it is not

I have the same problem on a GeForce GT 220, running 302.17
Ubuntu 12.04 and I upgraded to that (from 10.04 originally).
A manual 'sudo start lightdm' works perfectly, so I guess X tries to start
before the Nvidia kernel module is loaded.
This happens on almost every boot.

X defaulting keyboard locale to US at login after upgrading
distribution if
This does not appear to be Intel graphics only.
I experience this problem with a 2011 imac and a thinkpad x120e both
have AMD graphics, both proprietary drivers (I will test the opensource
stack though).
Currently both desktops use Gnome fallback.

OK, that xlog file was full of failures, so I wondered if it was something to
do with my profile. I have made a new one:
as root
mv /home/bob /home/bob.old
cp /etc/skel /home/bob
chown bob:bob -R /home/bob
reboot - exactly the same. So it was nothing to do with my profile
then.
