When the system puts the display to sleep after X amount of time of
inactivity it will not turn back on. Black screen. I can press
ctrl+alt+f1 to get me to a terminal session and that works. I then can
restart lightdm or reboot.
This started after upgrading to 15.10.
Problem

functional, only their displays are blacked out.
We know that already, the issue is that they are not really usable if
blacked out: we have a monitor/display for a reason.

For those with dual graphics: Although it is not supposed to be
required any longer, I answer this question often enough on the Ubuntu
Forums that I recommend the following:
If you have fglrx installed and end up with a blank/black screen, go
into recovery mode, mount your filesystem read/write.
Works fine for me.

Thanks for the heads up about updating the BIOS, next time I will
definitely do that before submitting a report to avoid wasting your
time.
However, the problem still occurs (after re-enabling animations in
compiz). Here is the output of the desired command:

While working through this, I realized that the upgrade to ubuntu 15.10 did
not update to the 4.2 kernel. I have since done that and so far the

I have some taint error while using fglrx-update from wily-proposed.
Nevertheless, i can boot with the proposed driver. modinfo fglrx also
shown nothing, maybe due to signature issue.
