[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1743797] Re: Xorg not recognizing AMD graphics card

2018-01-17 Thread Timo Aaltonen
putting 'radeon.modeset=0' to kernel options is what disables all hw
acceleration

if it doesn't boot properly without that, you need to test a newer
kernel, so try installing 'linux-generic-hwe-16.04'

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1735594] Re: [regression] compiz crashes after Mesa upgrade

2018-01-17 Thread laurel
My Unity Launcher now works after installing the January 17, 2018 update
from the Software Updater(gnome-software).

I'm a newbie so I wasn't able to use the fixes noted in the other
comments but after the install, I clicked on the side panel and the
Dash, File Manager, Chromium browser and the suite of Libre Office tools
all worked. The Launcher seems stable and doesn't flicker off and then
on. Also I can go to the wheel at the top right and shutdown the
computer now.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M645 (2011)
Intel Core i5 CPU, 64 bit OS
Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

THANK YOU, Timo and all who tested this fix. I appreciate all the work.
The good outcome of this, for me, was that I learned to use terminal
commands rather quickly! I now really appreciate the GUI interface.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1465266] Re: [xorg-edgers] lowering brightness with hotkeys causes it to drop to the minimum and stay minimal

2018-01-17 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
This can be fixed by adding `acpi_backlight=vendor` to the `linux`
stanza in `grub.cfg` which is effectively done by adding it to
`GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` in `/etc/default/grub` in Ubuntu 17.10 or
possibly earlier.

I'm leaving this open in order to suggest improvement of automatic
handling of this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1743401] Re: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow in libxkbcommon-x11.so

2018-01-17 Thread Oliver Stöneberg
Sorry I didn't think about this before, but I gave the non-ASAN version
of the application a spin with valgrind 3.13 and it doesn't report any
memory errors with it - so it's possible this is either something
valgrind won't catch or a false positive by ASAN.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1743797] [NEW] Xorg not recognizing AMD graphics card

2018-01-17 Thread Greta Regan
Public bug reported:

A few months after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04, my graphics card stopped
working. I got a black screen after booting. I was able to work around
that problem, and then around the problem of losing my external display
when I closed my laptop lid, so I can now boot normally and have only
one problem - I still only have software rendering, which isn't up to
the job.

I checked my graphics card and it was on the list of fully supported
versions. I found work-arounds online for my other problems, but no way
to fix this one, which results in choppy video with audio out of sync.

I trust the apport report which should be attached will give you the
specs you need.

Thanks.
