Adding a comment to indicate that this is a problem with the 10bpc support which is enabled in Radeon graphics. I am unsure if it is enabled in Intel's drivers, so that would explain why it does not occur there. Either VA-API is outputting wrong, the client library is outputting wrong, or all the player applications are wrong. Something appears to be matching the buffers to each other without a conversion, simply because both RGBA32 and RGBA10-10-10-2 have the same number of bytes per pixel, but clearly completely different structure. If you are really wanting to use "deep color" (10-bit) at 4K 60Hz then you will need a computer, cable and monitor that supports HDMI 2.1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_HDR10_video). I have had this problem since upgrading to 18.04. I am on a lenovo x260. I could not solve it so i disabled my touchpad in the BIOS. Recently I tried to reenable the touchpad and to my surprise it worked again. However, since I updated my system last week the error is back. Very frequent, random rightclicks which makes the system completely useless. I didn't get the above steps to work, so I choose a different way. I've tried to compile the missing "bochs-drm" module by following these steps : apt-get install linux-source-4.18.0 cd /usr/src/linux-source-4.18.0/ tar xjf linux-source-4.18.0.tar.bz2 cd linux-source-4.18.0/ apt-get install bison apt-get install flex apt-get install libelf-dev make oldconfig make menuconfig In the menus I searched and enabled the module CONFIG_DRM_BOCHS=m Then I launched the compilation : make modules # Get some coffee mkdir /lib/modules/4.18.0-12-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/bochs cp drivers/gpu/drm/bochs/*.ko /lib/modules/4.18.0-12-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/bochs depmod -a modprobe bochs-drm This didn't work and I got the following message in "dmesg" : bochs_drm: version magic '4.18.17 SMP mod_unload ' should be '4.18.0-12-generic SMP mod_unload ' But I found a way to change it by editing the main Makefile and changing : SUBLEVEL = 17 EXTRAVERSION = To the values : SUBLEVEL = 0 EXTRAVERSION = -12-generic Then I restarted a clean compilation : make clean make modules # Get some coffee cp drivers/gpu/drm/bochs/*.ko /lib/modules/4.18.0-12-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/bochs depmod -a modprobe bochs-drm systemctl start sddm And then I got SDDM back on screen !
