After upgrading from 10.10 and having the package cdemu installed, the
system crashes when starting X. Going into safe mode and removing cdemu
through sudo apt-get remove cdemu-daemon resolves the problem.

I was constantly having this same bug: oneiric would crash and the logs
would state that the GPU has fallen off the bus. What I did as a
workaround was to issue the following command:
nvidia-smi -pm 1
What this does is it turns on the nvidia's driver persistence mode.

Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F7 does not help.

In my case, the issue was randr1.2. I wrote a script that does this:
sudo rm /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
sudo aticonfig --initlal -f --overlay-type=Xv

installed successfully Catalyst 9.5 from AMD's site, and now I upgraded
to 9.6. I built the Ubuntu/9.04 drivers and then installed them all (you
can pass --help to the installer and it explains how to build packages
