[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1772588] Re: Remove obsolete X11 drivers from the archive

2020-04-01 Thread Bryan Quigley
@leosmuller - per our discussion your use case for the siliconmotion
driver should end in 2024. (1 year too late if removed from 20.04). As
we haven't found any other users of though I did offer to try
maintaining it in a PPA if needed for 20.04.

In the event it stays for 20.04, there is no reason to not remove it for
20.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1772588] Re: Remove obsolete X11 drivers from the archive

2019-11-07 Thread Bryan Quigley
@leosmuller
evdev was already marked invalid so it's not considered for removal as part of
this bug report. See comment #1.

siliconmotion - If they work for you on 18.04 LTS, you can keep running
that until 2023. I would be shocked if these are saving you power - and
happy to help with an analysis in specifics if you want. Please use the
contact this user button on my Launchpad page to discuss further (click
my name). We can bring a conclusion back to this bug report if relevant
- most of that conversation likely wouldn't be relevant.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1823516] Re: Nvidia driver installed but X apps are using software rendering (LLVMpipe) in Wayland sessions

2019-05-22 Thread Bryan Quigley
Couldn't find a bug, but it's described as a known issue here:
https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2019/04/03/preparing-for-fedora-
workstation-30/

Given the description above it seems to be waiting on a new nvidia
driver - still an issue on 430.14.

Should these removals happen first in Debian? Otherwise we would need
to add all these to a blacklist IMU as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1118903] Re: [enhancement] Mir lacks a software rendering backend (and doesn't work in virtual machines)

2016-10-24 Thread Bryan Quigley
I've found I can get Unity8 to render in virt-manager (Qemu/KVM) with
Display set to Spice and Video: QXL.

That might be a faster target (for QA) then getting full software
rendering. The only showstopper is the mouse doesn't let me go across
the entire screen. It seems what Mir says is the screen is different
than what the virt-viewer thinks.

2016-10-05 Thread Bryan Quigley
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates.

The 10.04 release had also reached EOL so we're going to close this
report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-08-09 Thread Bryan Quigley
f4c7 doesn't build on it's own it when cherry-picked.

Based on just the summary (no code review) I added the following 3 commits to
it:
00a3adaf43640b9aaa84b8cb98c1f2f227686689
52c9d7ca2467bc273a8ef3c61c1b690ac56caa74
ebc5e9c3b2241be69bee7b96bd63ef00dacf816c

The combination does build and with all of them the issue is fixed.
Ignoring the one big sna/gen9 patch this seems like it's still a
large amount of the changes in the driver.

Does /usr/lib(//mesa not count?

I also have it in /usr/lib/nvidia-364/libGL.so.

If this breaks existing things in some way I'm missing obviously that
wins out.

What about just getting rid of the:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so symlink?   It's provided by libgl1-mesa-dev.
 I have the nvidia driver installed and it libGL.so (above) is still symlinked

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1609110] Re: Do we still need the mesa or mesa-egl directories in /usr/lib/?

2016-08-04 Thread Bryan Quigley
Alternatively dropping just the /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so
symlink is consistent with what we currently do and makes the Wine build
work fine (see https://launchpad.net/~bryanquigley/+archive/ubuntu/wine-
sync-testing/+packages - arm failures are unrelated).

It's just the mesa dev package that makes the libGL.so symlink.

However I don't see us needing to have a mesa directory for that plan to
work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1609110] [NEW] Do we still need the mesa or mesa-egl directories in /usr/lib/?

2016-08-02 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

One of our mesa changes means we can't sync Wine packages (or wine-
development stuck in proposed) from Debian. See bug:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=827770

We purposely end up creating in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
mesa/ld.so.conf
mesa/libGL.so -> libGL.so.1.2.0
mesa/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.2.0
mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0
libGL.so -> mesa/libGL.so

Debian on the other hand just creates:
libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.2.0
libGL.so.1.2.0

I haven't found a clear reason for the divergence. I do see some
comments about making it work with the alternates system. I'm not sure
if that's current though. Long term libglvnd should help there in a
better way (IIUC).

For reference Fedora does:
/usr/lib64/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/libGL.so.1.2.0

Can we drop these Debian differences from mesa for Yakkety?

I've tested the binary produced for xenial (previous and pretty much

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1572667] Re: Screen flickering on second monitor

2016-05-05 Thread Bryan Abhser
I am not able to reproduce this consistently but it does occur
frequently.

What happens is my second monitor will go black for a few seconds and
then return to normal. This will happen a few times an hour. The monitor
on my laptop will be fine.

One more detail I am connecting to the second monitor through a Lenovo
docking station.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2015-09-25 Thread Bryan
Hi all. I am doing a fresh Debian install on my laptop and I had to re-
execute my instructions from my earlier post to try to hack my touchpad
into working. I ran into the same error that Pierre ran into! Eating my
own dog food I guess.

What I originally uploaded had a (completely unrelated) patch partially
applied to it; one file was patched but another was not. I have applied
the necessary patch to the header to make the source directory
consistent. I honestly have no idea how my first upload compiled on my
computer last time around, because it definitely should not have.
Anyways, if you tried my instructions from before and ran into the
"'SynapticsParameters' has no member named 'maxDeltaMM'" error, and you
are still looking for a solution to this annoying problem, then give
this a try. Follow the instructions from my old post, but start with
this archive.

Best of luck.

built fine before this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-18 Thread Bryan
Hi Pierre. Thank you for taking the time to create a patch.

My biggest change was moving the following up in the HandleState
function, so the low level state is corrected *before* doing button
detection (this removed the quirk that depended on the order in which
fingers hit the touchpad):

//Correct HW state by throwing out fingers outside of the active area
inside_active_area = FALSE;
hw-numFingers = 0;
for (int i = 0; i  hw-num_mt_mask; i++) {
ValuatorMask *f1;
Bool mt_inside;
double x1, y1;

if (hw-slot_state[i] == SLOTSTATE_EMPTY || hw-slot_state[i] ==
SLOTSTATE_CLOSE)
continue;

f1 = hw-mt_mask[i];
x1 = valuator_mask_get_double(f1, 0);
y1 = valuator_mask_get_double(f1, 1);
mt_inside = is_inside_active_area(priv, x1, y1);
if (!mt_inside) {
hw-slot_state[i] = SLOTSTATE_EMPTY;
continue;
}
if (!inside_active_area) {
inside_active_area = TRUE;
hw-x = x1;
hw-y = y1;
}
hw-numFingers++;
}

You may notice that I removed the check to see if the touchpad is a
clickpad - I did this because it did not look like the code was being
executed. You could put that back in (turned out I was not actually
replacing the installed driver when I did make install).

Secondly, I also removed something odd from is_inside_active_area. That
function now looks like:

static Bool is_inside_active_area(SynapticsPrivate * priv, int x, int y) {
if ((priv-synpara.area_left_edge != 0)  (x
priv-synpara.area_left_edge))
return FALSE;
else if ((priv-synpara.area_right_edge != 0)  (x
priv-synpara.area_right_edge))
return FALSE;

if ((priv-synpara.area_top_edge != 0)  (y
priv-synpara.area_top_edge))
return FALSE;
else if ((priv-synpara.area_bottom_edge != 0)  (y
priv-synpara.area_bottom_edge))
return FALSE;

return TRUE;
}

I did this mainly because the code that was there was not consistent
with how the function is being used now - it would return true in
circumstances when the source finger was NOT in the active area but if
something else was (which could mess up the finger count). I don't think
I tried the first change without the second, but it is certainly
plausible that the second change could fix the type of behavior you are
talking about. I have not seen such behavior on my machine with these
changes.

It seems suspicious that the patched driver would result in no changes.
I would make sure that you are actually running your custom version of
the driver and not the stock version. Try to break something
deliberately - I would suggest putting:

if (hw-numFingers  1) hw-numFingers = 1;

After the first change and try to run the new driver. If two-finger
scroll still works you know that you are running the old driver.

Also use synclient to check the value of AreaBottomEdge. Try dropping
this and see if you see different behavior. The patched driver needs
this option set correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-17 Thread Bryan
Hi Pierre. Unfortunately I don't know what is going on here. The only
thing I can think of is that maybe some dev packages are missing,
although this is not how I would expect that kind of failure to look.
What I can say is that the code your compiler is complaining about was
not something I changed. Perhaps try building a vanilla version of the
driver first (download the source from
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/x/x7driver.html#xorg-
synaptics-driver).

Once that is building correctly, go back and try my modified version.
There should be more people able to help you get the vanilla version
building. I hope you are successful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-11-16 Thread Bryan
Ok - since there has been little to no developer progress on this bug
for a long time, I have tried to muck through the synaptics driver
source code on my own to track this problem down. I tried the patch
suggested by Charlie but it did not really help. It ignored a finger on
the touchpad button if it was the *second* finger to hit the pad, but
the problem remained if it was the first finger down. I have made an
adjustment that effectively fixes the problem on my touchpad - fingers
outside the active area are ignored no matter the order in which they
touch the pad. I will post my modified driver source here in the hopes
that it will fix the issue for other users as well.

I have to say that the synaptics driver is a complete mess of spaghetti
code (I found GOTO statements. That's right... GOTO statements!). I am
very far from actually understanding the driver - I only decrypted
enough to make this modification. The one side effect that I am aware of
that results from my change is that you cannot right-click using the
right soft button if you have other fingers on the touchpad already. You
either need to two-finger click or remove the other fingers before right
clicking. Other than that everything else works, including two-finger
scrolling (onggie's suggestion sacrifices this). I do not use tap-to-
click since it drives me crazy, so I have not tested this.

To apply this fix you need to replace your installed xorg synaptics
driver. I will try to walk you through this here. First, you need to
figure out where your driver is installed. Different distributions put
it in different places. If you use Debian, the driver will be installed
to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input and the extra stuff will be in other
places in /usr. Some ditros put components in /usr/local/..., so you
need to figure this out. I suggest using your package manager to locate
the xorg synaptics driver and look at the installed files - this will
tell you where they are hiding.

Next, download and extract the archive I have attached. Open a terminal
to the extracted directory. You need to run ./configure next, but you
must pass it the installation prefix so when you install the driver it
goes to the correct place for your distro. In Debian, run ./configure
--prefix=/usr. If your distro stores the driver in /usr/local, then use
this as the prefix instead.

Next, run make and ensure that it builds without error (you will
probably need some dev packages installed). Then run sudo make
install. Now, you need to set the AreaBottomEdge option for the driver
to define the region you want to ignore fingers in. I suggest running
synclient and find the value you have for the option
RightButtonAreaTop. Use the same value for AreaBottomEdge. This will
make sure that the button region and the active regions butt up
against each other but do not overlap. When you know what value you want
to use, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf and add
the option value to there (create this file if it does not exist). My
conf file looks like this:

Section InputClass
Identifier  Trackpad
MatchIsTouchpad on
Driver  synaptics

Option  TapButton11
Option  TapButton22
Option  TapButton33

#Uncomment the followings to scroll with your thumb
#Option  EmulateTwoFingerMinZ  70
#Option  EmulateTwoFingerMinW  0

Option  VertTwoFingerScroll   1
Option  HorizTwoFingerScroll  0

#Let finger rest
Option AreaBottomEdge 1822
EndSection

Finally, you will need to reboot for the new driver to be loaded
(unloading and re-loading the psmouse module does not do the trick - not
sure why not). When you reboot, hopefully your clickpad woes will be
over. Best of luck!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1320990] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] BOINC can't find CUDA driver with xorg-edgers packages

2014-05-19 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 14.04 with Xorg Edgers and a Geforce 750 Ti. Installed
nvidia-337,-dev,-uvm, libcuda1-337. With these packages from xorg-
edgers everything graphical/game/etc wise runs perfectly, except for
CUDA though BOINC.

When installed directly from nvidia's website CUDA worked fine in BOINC.

Now BOINC just says missing GPU type NVIDIA (generally it looks for
CUDA, but OpenCL doesn't appear to work either).

I have not had it working on any previous version of xorg-edgers (just
got the GPU recently).

2014-03-08 Thread Bryan Quigley
Tested on LXDE, Kernel 3.13, and stock Mesa for 14.04. Still crashes..
but.

LXDE seems to let it respawn forever.
Kernel 3.13 Stock Mesa seems to let it return to compiz more often, but still
sometimes fails.

GPU is locking up...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-02-27 Thread Bryan
Can someone confirm that this has been fixed upstream? It looks like
there may be some goofyness regarding the ordering in which fingers make
contact with the touchpad, and it may be broken by:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-input-
synaptics/commit/?id=945acfc261707be78cbc5438c22b061e20076004

If it is fixed does anyone know when it will trickle down into Ubuntu or
Debian? Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952401] Re: Shutting the lid interrupts laptop suspend

2014-02-10 Thread Bryan Eastin
Hi, it turns out that my DVD drive is malfunctioning. It can write DVDs
(sometimes at least), but can't read them. Using an external drive I
was able to liveboot to today's Trusty build. The issue with sleep mode
is still there.

I couldn't get my wireless working or get Trusty to shut down normally.
My machine is clearly malfunctioning, so I don't know how much of this
should be ascribed to the software and how much to my hardware.

I'm thinking it's time to look into buying a new computer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952401] Re: Shutting the lid interrupts laptop suspend

2014-02-02 Thread Bryan Eastin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  When I select Turn off the screen as the action to be performed when
  my laptop lid is closed I get the following behavior: If I direct the
  computer to suspend (sleep) and then close lid of the laptop before it's
  finished going to sleep then the suspend process never completes. I
  think the laptop ought to go to sleep regardless of how quickly I close
  the lid.

  I believe this issue is related to the bugs reported at
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/859178 and
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/387553, though I was
  unable to reproduce these bugs. (It is presumably also related to the
  fact that when I had Sleep selected as the action to be performed when
  my laptop lid was closed putting the laptop to sleep and then closing
  the lid too fast would result in two suspends. That is, the laptop
  would suspend, but when I woke it it, it would suspend a second time.)

  This is not a pressing issue for me since I have discovered that
  selecting Do nothing as the action to be performed when my laptop lid
  is closed results in the correct behavior and turning my screen off when
  the lid is closed but the computer is still on is not a huge priority.
  Nevertheless, it would be nice to fix this.

  WORKAROUND: Wait until suspend initiated via command line or GUI to
  finish before closing the lid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952401] Re: Shutting the lid interrupts laptop suspend

2014-01-31 Thread Bryan Eastin
Christopher M. Penalver,

I upgraded my laptop first to Precise and then to Quantal, but the bug
persists. I tried to boot from the Live CD, but it fails on me. I made
sure that the computer was actually trying to boot from the CD, and I
checked the MD5SUM of the iso and it's right.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if Trusy just doesn't like
my machine. Anyhow, I can't get it to work.

Hi Christopher M. Penalver, this is still an issue for Oneiric Ocelot,
but that doesn't say much about the current distribution I suspect. I
will try to find the time to upgrade my system sometime soonish so that
I can tell you whether it's still a problem for newer releases. (I hate
upgrading. Everything always gets messed up.)

I appreciate your taking the time to ask,

Downgraded pixman for the test (so it would actually crash)
Upgraded only xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core
It still crashes Xorg if we don't have the pixman fix..

This is trivially reproducible in a VM (I'm using vagrant/virtualbox).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033052] Re: Black screen after completed boot on ASUS Eee 1101HA (xubuntu 12.04: psb_gfx/gma500: ioremap error for 0x7f66e000-0x7f671000)

2013-12-13 Thread Bryan
Sounds related to my experience with a 1920x1200 HDMI connected to a
laptop. After boot and auto-login, if the laptop display is configured
above the external, the external comes up blank. Side by side, the
laptop comes up blank. If I change the desktop background, then both
monitors show the proper background.

next reboot I'll have to try the lightdm restart idea to see what
happens.

Ubuntu Lucid is no longer supported on the desktop. Because of that
should we drop this SRU?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168139] Re: hostname: No protocol specified and Can't open display errors.

2013-09-20 Thread Bryan Fullerton
Thanks for taking the time to report this issue and make Ubuntu better.
To confirm, did you restart your machine after changing /etc/hostname
and /etc/hosts? Generally speaking changing the hostname without a
restart can cause the issues you're describing, because the previous
hostname is cached in the running applications (such as the graphical
display system).
