Disabling systemd management of lid does not help.
Workaround is to disable, in the power manager, the handling of lid closing and

With new updates of 2.6.32-29 (or maybe before) the problem seems to be solved.
I have just removed nomodset from grub config and boot time seems OK and in
dmesg I only see once:

With new updates of 10.04 LTS I confirm that nomodeset helps:
- Without it I get render errors during more than 70 seconds
- With it I get 3 render errors and the PC boots in 30 seconds.

scrolling.
Even worse, after booting the screen remained black. No way to switch to
console. I needed to boot in recovery mode and uninstall ppa.
