[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2028165] [NEW] nvidia-dkms-* FTBS with linux 6.5

2023-07-19 Thread Paolo Pisati
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 from
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.157/build/nvidia/nv-instance.c:13:

/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.157/build/common/inc/nv-mm.h:164:45: error: passing
argument 1 of ‘get_user_pages_remote’ from incompatible pointer type

  164 |return get_user_pages_remote(tsk, mm, start, nr_pages,
flags,
  | ^~~
  | |
  | struct task_struct *
...

[Fix]

Apply the attached fix.

[How to test]

Install (and build) the patched packet.

[Regression potential]

The fix is composed of two patches:

1) the first patch simply garbage collect a reference to a function that
was never used but that had the API changed in Linux 6.5 - so, it's a
trivial change.

2) the second patch actually reimplement part of the vma scanning that was
removed in __get_user_pages_locked() in upstream commit
b2cac248191b7466c5819e0da617b0705a26e197 "mm/gup: removed vmas
array from internal GUP functions" - here is where most likely any regression
could be found.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2025266] [NEW] nvidia-dkms-* FTBS with linux 6.4

Public bug reported:

[Impact]

[Fix]

Apply the attached patch.

[How to test]

Build the dkms package and install it.

[Regression potential]

This patch doesn't come from NVIDIA itself, so there's a regression
potential, though i can't state how severe that could be.

[Fix]

Apply the attached patch.

[How to test]

Build the dkms package and install it.

[Regression potential]

This patch doesn't come from NVIDIA itself, so there's a regression
potential, though i can't state how severe that could be.

2018-12-21 Thread Paolo Carrera
Hi Chris!
Thank you for reply. I think we can close this 3D. Graphic card of my
laptop PC died a week after my last update.
Now is repaired (cooling fans too), I've formatted and reinstalled Ubuntu.
Now all goes well.
Thanks.
Paolo

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1635906] Re: Low graphics mode in multi monitor setup after upgrade to 16.10

2016-11-02 Thread Paolo
Hi! At last I... SOLVED!!!

Before I saw:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/436374/how-to-get-rid-of-the-gallium-0-4
-on-llvmpipe-llvm-0x300-driver-intel-needed

...then I saw:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

...later, on a terminal, I've run:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-xenial
xserver-xorg-core-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-video-
all-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-xenial libwayland-egl1-mesa-
lts-xenial

...and, after a restart, my PC returned to work with the correct "Intel®
Sandybridge Desktop" instead of "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe..."!

I hope that it can help you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5

2015-11-12 Thread Paolo
Hi, i've been trying for some days to get the driver working, but whitout any
result. I actually don't understand why it worked on Ubuntu and not working
with Ubuntu Gnome?
I can just see the splash screen and black screen after that. No login manager
displayed. I can log into tty1.
Does anyone have suggestion?

I attached my dmesg message.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5

2015-10-28 Thread Paolo
It WORKS on a Lenovo z50 whit AMD R7-M260DX graphic card.
I installed:

"2:15.201-0ubuntu2~15.10.1" (Ubuntu:15.10/wily-proposed [amd64]) selezionata
per "fglrx-updates"
"2:15.201-0ubuntu2~15.10.1" (Ubuntu:15.10/wily-proposed [amd64]) selezionata
per "fglrx-updates-core"
"2:15.201-0ubuntu2~15.10.1" (Ubuntu:15.10/wily-proposed [amd64]) selezionata
per "fglrx-amdcccle-updates"

from proposed repository.
But I had to blacklist amdgpu module in order to get this driver working.
Should I report this behaviour on #1510573 ?
Thanks for your work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with kernel 4.2

2015-10-25 Thread Paolo
Same problem here. I'm running Ubuntu 15.10 with 4.2.0-16-generic kernel
on a Lenovo z50 (AMD). This laptop comes whit an AMD FX-7500 core and a
AMD R7-M260DX graphic card. When installing fglrx-updates I could only
obtain a black screen. I had to enter a root shell in recovery mode and
uninstall the driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1370208] [NEW] Black screen after booting

2014-09-16 Thread Paolo
Public bug reported:

When I switch on my desktop, I see the booting information on the
screen, then the screen turns black. I can hear the opening sound of
Ubuntu, but the screen remains black. Only if I switch off my screen and
then switch it on again, I can see the login screen of Ubuntu, then
everything works fine. This is not a major problem, but somehow
annoying. My screen is a Samsung LCD TV set Series A 3-4-5-6-7. It used

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 958279] Re: FGLRX DPMS support totally broken, fails to wake up the monitor after putting it to sleep.

2014-08-28 Thread Paolo Poli
Hello everybody

I'm experiencing this bug too , I'm running Kubuntu 14.04 lts 64bit and using
fglrx-updates (Radeon HD 7790)
I don't know if this applies to other setups... distros... different
window-managers etc ... This is the only scenario
in which I could test and have this problem.

The steps I've taken to reproduce this behaviour are the following:

1 - Install fglrx-updates drivers

2 - Wait for the display to be switched off by the power-manager

3 - After the screen has fully switched off and entered stand-by mode, trying
to move the mouse
or hitting any of the keys on your keyboard simply does not wake up the screen.
Your display is permanently
stuck in sleep mode and you have to reboot your computer.

There's just something wrong with the computer telling the screen to wake up
because
while the display is off, the system is still running I guess as I managed to
avoid hard-resetting my computer
by using the terminal and issuing a shutdown command (going by memory, since
the display is OFF).

I haven't tested the workarounds suggested above but I'll keep this post
updated as soon as I try.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 958279] Re: FGLRX DPMS support totally broken, fails to wake up the monitor after putting it to sleep.

2014-08-28 Thread Paolo Poli
Referring to my post above...
I confused one for another , I actually had to enter a TIMED shutdown command
to reboot my system while testing the display switch-on/off because the system
was running but not responding my inputs at all after my screen was going off.

I also have tested some of the solutions I've read above and found some odd
things.

-- So , after installing fglrx-updates I had no xorg.conf file by
default (which is ok..) ;

-- I generated one with sudo amdconfig --initial and set DPMS to false ,
then rebooted ... this workaround actually worked for me in the sense
that it basically prevented the system to send a standby/switch-off
signal to the monitor ... instead, it was just blanking and keeping it
powered on. (so far so good)

-- Then out of curiousity I tried setting the DPMS back to true, after
rebooting the system I noticed it was working,
the display was correctly entering and exiting the standby mode. Thus, my
problem was that I had no xorg.conf file by default.
So yay, everything worked fine ... no, not everything actually.

-- I don't know why but having an xorg.conf file somehow affects my
graphic effects , for example when I'm in the KDE system-settings panel
there's a fade-out effect when moving the mouse-pointer from one icon to
another ... well that one graphic effect is now broken, the fading
effect is glitchy and makes some artifacts when fading ... this does not
happen when I have no xorg.conf file.

Both ways I have something malfunctioning ... either graphics-ok + screen
standby not working or the other way around.
I guess I'll be keeping my /etc/X11 without an xorg.conf file and just disable
the powermanagement option for display standby

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1135620] Re: System boots in text mode and X doesn't start

2014-01-09 Thread Paolo Amoroso
I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 with the proprietary nVidia drivers, the ones
accessible from the Ubuntu system settings, which fixed the issue. Now
crashes are a thing of the past and Ubuntu is rock-solid stable. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1188795] Re: xorg

2013-06-08 Thread Paolo Rotolo
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively

if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1135620] [NEW] System boots in text mode and X doesn't start

2013-02-28 Thread Paolo Amoroso
Public bug reported:

At times the system boots in text mode, with the text [OK] (and
occasionally some graphics gargabe in an area the size of a few text
characters) on the screen, and X doesn't start. Once, I happened to hear
the drums sound played by the Unity login screen after boot. I am able
to get a shell with Ctrl+Alt+Fn.

I experienced the issue with the kernel version recorded by Apport for
this bug, as well as earlier versions. When it happens, I am able to get
a fully working system, with X and Unity running fine, by just
rebooting.

My PC has an Intel Core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz × 4 with 8GB of RAM, a
450GB hard disk, and an Nvidia Quadro 400 graphics card. I'm running 64
bit Ubuntu 12.10 with the Nouveau drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1056045] Re: Screen corruption on live boot (nVidia)

2012-09-25 Thread Paolo Sammicheli
I see the Ubuntu logo with the dot booting the system, then I heard the
drum roll sound and the system ends with screen corruption (see the
screenshot). So basically, it get screen corruption just when X start.

Using ALT+F1 I've been able to get a textual terminal and launch apport
for colletting the files I attached.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 951395] Re: end session doesn't work

2012-03-11 Thread Paolo Rotolo
Hi Sandra,
Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to Ubuntu.
In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your
computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce
the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Hold Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press e to edit it.
3. Select the kernel line and press e to edit it.
4. At the end of the line, remove splash and quiet and press enter.
5. Type b to boot the custom boot line.

Please do this on a clean image of Edubuntu (without the new user).
Can you also verify the MD5SUM of the .iso image
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM)?

Thanks,
Paolo

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 34043] Re: Nvidia binary driver requires Option NvAGP 1 for reliable suspend/resume

2011-12-14 Thread Paolo UnixMan Saggese
Old Dell Inspiron 8600 with:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX
Go5200 64M] (rev a1)

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot server with TDE desktop (Kubuntu trinity
remix) manually installed afterwards.

By default, resume from both suspend to ram disk failed.

Problem solved by:

*) removing all quirks from:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-dell.fdi

/usr/lib/pm-utils/video-quirks/20-video-quirk-pm-dell.quirkdb

*) adding NvAGP 1 to xorg.conf

I've also edited /etc/default/acpi-support; AFAIU in principle this
should not matter. Nevertheless, changes are as follows:

- SUSPEND_METHODS=dbus-pm dbus-hal pm-utils
+ SUSPEND_METHODS=dbus-pm pm-utils

- ACPI_SLEEP=true
+ #ACPI_SLEEP=true

- ACPI_HIBERNATE=true
+ #ACPI_HIBERNATE=true

- ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem
+ ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=standby

- SAVE_VBE_STATE=true
+ SAVE_VBE_STATE=false

- POST_VIDEO=true
+ POST_VIDEO=false

- # DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true
+ DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true

That's all folks!

Hope it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876416] [NEW] Low brightness on MacBookPro 7.1 (nvidia VGA)

2011-10-17 Thread Paolo
Public bug reported:

On a fresh installation of Ubuntu 11.10 I got problems with the
brightness. As soon I try to change it with the keyboard keys I am not
able to increase it to a usable value.

The problem is related to the max_brightness set as 1025, while the normal
value when the system starts is 119443. These two values comes from the files:
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:17.0/:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/brightness

/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:17.0/:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/actual_brightness
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:17.0/:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/max_brightness

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-08-02 Thread Paolo Olivo
@Jens Grüntjes:
I didn't unistall the ubuntu driver first and I actually don't know if
reboot is really necessary.
Your solution may also be sufficient.

2011/7/29 Jens Grüntjes 760...@bugs.launchpad.net:
 @olivopaolo:
Did you uninstall the ubuntu driver first? Is the reboot really needed?
 Wouldn't it be sufficient to
sudo modprobe -r nvidia sudo modprobe nvidia sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

But I'm still curious: Why did the updated driver not yet make it into
 the repositories?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 818274] [NEW] xsetwacom ccw rotates clockwise

2011-07-29 Thread Paolo
Public bug reported:

The command 'xsetwacom set 14 rotate cw' rotates the input from the
stylus counterclocwise, instead of clockwise as it should.

I've observed this behaviour on a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 tablet running
Ubuntu 11.04 with version 1:0.10.11-0ubuntu4 of 1:0.10.11-0ubuntu4.
