I can confirm that the bug still happens on Karmic -- the Java applet
crashes X after a couple of seconds.
Regarding backtracking, I have apport running (and it did not catch the
backtrace). I also tried the gdb way, but as soon as I attached gdb to

When I say I can't go past I mean that I can't increase the resolution
(for 16:9) past 1280x720 without having severely distorted graphics.
When I do increase past 1280x720 all I see in large parts of the screen
are smears of pixels. Some of the screen (the bars at top and bottom,

I had a similar issue, but now have 9.10 running smoothly.
It seems that the upgrade process disables all proprietary drivers, but
does so without updating xorg.conf to use the default non-proprietary
drivers.
All I did to fix this was login via a rescue shell, edit xorg.conf so
that nothing was

Same problem here, with CRT 17 monitor, max resolution is 800x600, i tweaked
something with xrandr
and now i can get max 1024x768. But monitor supports also higher resolutions.

Graphical Glitches and OpenGL
The following comment in bug 383345 seems to sum up the root cause of
this issue. Though, why it worked in Jaunty and not in Karmic, I don't
