The AST2400 is a server graphics chip. Is this a server? If so, I
wouldn't worry about it running in low graphics mode. FYI, support for
the AST2400 VGA chip was added in the 3.16 kernel.

I don't see any bug in xorg. Your notebook appears to have successfully
booted to a 1366x768 display on an LVDS panel.

After upgrading my laptop to Ubuntu 16.10, I noticed that the secondary
monitor I use at work was showing a black background instead of the
background shown on my primary display. Also if windows were dragged to
the secondary display I would see weird artifacts such as
Apparently the AST driver is hardcoded to look for it's firmware. Try
downloading the ast_dp501_fw.bin file from
https://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/ and place it in /lib/firmware
FYI, David Airlie is the linux kernel's DRM maintainer.

Low graphics
I've found I can get Unity8 to render in virt-manager (Qemu/KVM) with
Display set to Spice and Video: QXL.
That might be a faster target (for QA) then getting full software
rendering. The only showstopper is the mouse doesn't let me go across
the entire screen. It seems what Mir says is the

- Clean install of Ubuntu 16.10: No luck
- Clean install of Ubuntu Gnome:
- GNOME and GNOME Classic (I believe) sessions - same result, although it
managed to reach login screen. But once I type in the password and hit
