LightDM failed to load after upgrade to 280.13, issuing a 'startx' will
start an X session, however compiz fails to load. Can only get a working
session by reverting to Nouveau driver.
Installed: 280.13-0ubuntu5
Candidate: 280.13-0ubuntu5
Version table:
Reverting to nvidia-current_280.13-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb from the apt cache
corrected problem.

I had a similar issue on bug #865768. I was able to correct this by
reverting to nvidia-current_280.13-0ubuntu4.

have a look in /var/cache/apt/archives/ to see if you still have the old
version of nvidia-current.
should be current_280.13-0ubuntu4 (current_280.13-0ubuntu5 was the version
causing issues on my system)
if you do, then:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current
sudo dpkg -i
appears to be a race issue, the LightDM service starts before
/dev/nvidiactrl is created.
adding sleep 5 service lightdm start to rc.local provides a
temporary fix.

Hi Bryce,
I've since switched to using KDM as the login manager, but I the issue
did seem to be resolved within a few days of the release. I would
imagine it to be safe to close the bug report as no comments have been
made since.
