[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470224] Re: [i965q] screen resolution only sees 640x480 and 800x600 since Karmic fresh install

2010-03-03 Thread Sing Wang Ho
I have a i965Q card as well and I have the same problem as the bug
reporter there. My problem can also be worked around by adding
'nomodeset' in the kernel setting.

As Geir Ove Myhr suggested:
I downloaded and burnt a copy of:
lucid-desktop-i386.iso with marked date: 24-Feb-2010 19:10

I get a blank screen and the computer reboots. Unfortunately I cannot
provide more info. Also the intel driver fails to detect dual monitor,
I wonder if this has something to do with it.

2010-03-03 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Sing Wang Ho, thank you for testing this. Please file a separate bug
report from Lucid, since this kind of problem usually has to do with the
particulars of the monitor and we don't want to mix that information
into this bug report.

2010-03-01 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu
since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been
fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu
development version (Lucid, availble from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/), this would help us a lot. If
you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you
could upload updated logs by running `apport-collect 470224`, and any
other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470224] Re: [i965Q] screen resolution only sees 640x480 and 800x600 since Karmic fresh install

2009-11-04 Thread guiliker
After re-reading the 64-bit stuff I downloaded the b4-bit Karmic live
CD.

Running the Live CD as is the only displays available were 640x480 and
800x600 on restart entering the boot command nomodeset the following
display resolutions were also available: 1360x768, 1152x864 (default),
and 1024x768. I am attaching the results of xrandr --verbose and the
Xorglog.

I am starting to think this monitor works best on 4:3 resolutions on
linux and 4:5 on windows, as on my XP Pro partition the default
resolution is 1280x1024 with all the 4:3 resolutions appearing warped.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470224] Re: [i965Q] screen resolution only sees 640x480 and 800x600 since Karmic fresh install

2009-11-03 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
However attached are the logs you asked for. Behaviour wise with that
boot command included the login screen was not bunched up at the
bottom. All of the options were clear to see and select instead of being
 on top of each other.

I assume the bunching up you refer to is caused by the low resolution.
It seems that it chooses 1024x768 without KMS, in which case there
will be more space, but it is still not the native resolution of
1280x1024. From the logs it is clear that it does not manage to read
the EDID in this case either, it just guesses a higher resolution.

I would like to try a 64-bit approach however I am a little afraid that
the hardware would not be capable of it and since I do not understand
enough about it. I'm not going to do it. I hope that does not impede
 your advice/research into this bug.

From your ProcCpuinfo.txt:
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
Probably this: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9SA
The Core2 processors are 64-bit processors which are also capable of
running 32-bit operating systems
(http://developer.intel.com/technology/intel64/index.htm). So your
system should be capable of running 64-bit. It's what it's made for.
That being said, it's not really a big deal. I can do without it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 470224] Re: [i965Q] screen resolution only sees 640x480 and 800x600 since Karmic fresh install

2009-11-02 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make ubuntu better. We
prefer to have logs and other files attached rather than pasted in,
since it is rather daunting to find what you need in a very long bug
report.

It seems that the problem is that xorg is not able to read the EDID
information even though get-edid does it all right. There are a few
things you can do to help us narrow down the cause of this.

1. Could you disable KMS when you boot ('Esc' on boot to show the Grub menu,
'e' to edit the kernel command line and then add 'nomodeset' after 'quiet
splash'). In this case it may or may not be able to read the EDID. In any case,
attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of `xrandr --verbose` here (but as
attachments, not pasted into a comment).
2. I think it is a little different how the EDID is read on 32-bit and 64-bit
systems. If your system is capable of 64-bit (most newer systems are), could
you try a LiveCD/LiveUSB with 64-bit (amd64) and see if it makes a difference.
Attach the same information as in 1.
