Workaround: Delete the .audacity-data folder in your home directory. The
next time you launch Audacity, menu items should be re-enabled.
I have no idea why audacity seems to be corrupting its own data and
tripping on itself...

Most menu items
Update: While the workaround of deleting ~/.audacity-data works
initially, the menu items soon become greyed out again when you begin to
interact with Audacity :(

I may have figured it out... if you have started to play the music, then
most items will become disabled. Pausing does not re-enable the menu
items... you must stop playback, and then the items will become re-
enabled. I figured this out once I noticed that this occurs even on
Windows 7 with
