One of the ways to be sure this doesn't happen would be to force a purge
of everything that has been installed from third-party repositories, do
a clean upgrade, and re-install any pruged packages from the Debian
repos. With some big What-Ifs remaining when said packages happen to
e.g. not be avail

My suggestion would be to try to pour all that anger energy into
checking whether the change mentioned in the quoted parts of
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/789#note_777421 does solve
that issue.

The fix is rather easy: get the package maintainer to build GIMP 2.8
against GEGL 0.2, just like upstream does it.
The "fix released" is for GIMP 2.9 (the current development version)
