The Internal Security Organisation Director General, Col. Elly Kayanja, on Wednesday evening forcefully took over a stall of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) at the on-going Jinja agricultural show and distributed a number of items meant for exhibition.

Sources at the stall said Kayanja, who was wearing civilian clothes, arrived at the stall at around 5:30pm after the exhibitors had left and found the stall caretaker, Mutegeki Kahuta, locking up, but he forced his way inside.

Kayanja reportedly travelled to the show in a black Land Cruiser and was followed by a lorry with a group of people, some in military uniform. The majority wore white T-shirts.

"He was followed by a large crowd of about 40 people. I told him we had closed but he pushed me by the neck and let in everyone. He said he would take whatever item he wanted. He said whoever asked who took the items should be shown the business card (above) which he left behind," Mutegeki said.

Mutegeki said part of Kayanja's contingent was

also in civilian clothes while the rest in military fatigues. The New Vision yesterday saw the red plastic business card, which Kayanja is said to have left behind at the stall.

A NARO official who witnessed the act said, "he and his group picked whatever they could reach, which included items like grafted mango and orange seedlings, farmers' guide books sold at sh2,500 each and a number of improved seed samples."

"The vandalised items were meant to give a clear picture of this year's theme for the show especially as we exhibit to farmers," she added.

The theme is: "Improving household incomes through value addition."

The source said some ripe mangoes and oranges were picked and eaten up. Kayanja is currently attending a course at the Senior Command and Staff College in Jinja.

"We had to bring in other items because a lot of them were found missing in the morning." Jinja Police Station O/C Daniel Zeba said. He said he saw Kayanja leave the show at around 6:30pm.

"I saw him leave with his people, but I have not got any information on what he did at the show. What I am hearing is news to me," Zeba said.

It was not possible to reach Kayanja on phone. He was reportedly attending a meeting at the college.

"He left his telephone with me," his aide said.

He said Kayanja would call after the meeting.
