THE visiting President of the Italian Human Rights Commission, Enrico Pianetta, has said the situation in northern Uganda requires involvement of the international community.Pianetta, heading a delegation of two Italian Senators, Avessanoro Forlani and Nuncio Iovene, said the move is important due to the humanitarian concern.

They visited the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) on Buganda Road to find their view of the gravity of the situation in the war-torn northern region. They were led by Ambassador Maurizio Feucci."We came to know especially the situation in Northern Uganda.

We have toured the area, visited the camps and other places and seen the situation with our eyes. Humanitarian assistance should be a priority that's why we are here to call for international involvement."We are here to know more on the humanitarian concerns of the UHRC in the north and how it can guarantee the situation of, say children and women. We are worried about the human rights action required now," he added.

UHRC chairperson Margarat Sekaggya explained to the visitors the role of the Commission."Our regional office in Gulu has been very instrumental, through protecting the rights of the civilian population against all sorts of atrocities in the war," she said. She thanked the Italian Government.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
