THE leader of the Conservative Party (CP), Joash Mayanja Nkangi, has accused the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) of maligning other political parties and leaders and seeking cheap popularity.

Nkangi was yesterday reacting to remarks by UPC Presidential Policy Commission (PPC) chairperson Dr. James Rwanyarare that small, nonentity political organisations and factions of established political parties were driven by monetary gains in the ongoing consultation talks with the Government.

During yesterday's weekly press briefing at Uganda House, Rwanyarare singled out Nkangi's CP and Nelson Ocheger's Action Party as leaders treating the talks like a consultancy."Ocheger was a Movement consultant during the Referendum on Political Systems in 2000. And he was paid handsomely. He was paid sh200m.

"Even Mayanja Nkangi has been a Movement consultant before. He was in charge when some of these statutes now causing problems were tabled. That is why he was even rejected by his party. Now he is again being consulted," he said.Nkangi later said his political interests transcended material gains.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
