The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Ssekandi, has said that both the Church and the government must find a solution to the northern rebellion.

He was speaking at the opening of the Masaka 5th Diocesan Synod at Katigondo National Seminary on Monday."It is our collective responsibility to ensure there is total peace all over the country, especially in northern Uganda. Joseph Kony's rebellion has caused a lot of suffering, which has been extended to children as well," he said.

He also encouraged church leaders to compete for political positions."Given your leadership talents, it is wrong for you not to compete for political jobs. If you shun politics, it will be taken up by wrong elements," he said. The Synod will end on August 24.

Members attending the Synod include church leaders, catholic priests and representatives from other religious organisations. The Pope's Pronuncio Christopher Pierre, who was chief guest, called upon the priests to renew their priestly vocation.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
